Word & Service Ministry is a call to specialized ministry that bridges the church and the world at the intersections of world and church. As of the 2016
Evangelical Church in America Churchwide Assembly the former three Word & Service roster titles have been unified to be called Deacons.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?!
- Deacons are called to Word - word of God - and Service - to the church & world.
- Each Diaconal Minister has a specialization such as Children, Youth, and Family Ministry, Spiritual Direction, Pastoral Care, Earth Keeping Ministries, Hunger and Homeless Awareness, and more.
- Deacons have a seminary degree either in a Master of Arts program or Master of Divinity program.
- Deacon's calls/jobs may come from within a congregation or within a community non-profit organzation that allows a Christian influence in one's work.
As a consecrated Deacon in the ELCA, my goal is to serve the neighbor through the power of the Holy Spirit and with the Word of God, as best as I am able. Spirit led hospitality leads others and me to a new way of being the church with and for all God's creation, especially those in their
first/third of life.
